Mochi-tsuki* and New Year Party (Richmond)

January 7, 2007

This exciting annual event has been a JVS tradition for many years.

We had an unprecedented number of participants this year -300. Itís

not only record-breaking news, but also a great way to kick off the

new year.

Young and old (some from Washington DC and New York ) all

got together at Kabuto South, a Japanese restaurant, on the first

Sunday of the year. The day was filled with great times and tasty treats. The

traditional mochi-tsuki demonstration calls for a pair of real wooden

mortar and a mallet (see the link Mochi-tsuki). Some lucky people went home

full of smiles and the prize air tickets thanks to the fun raffle that was held.

We look forward to having you at our next Mochi-tsuki & New Year Party!

All set and ready to go. Men in happi coats standing by!

The serving team needed the most volunteers of all to keep the customers happy. The serving team does more than just serve a piece of rice cake to a couple of hundred empty stomachs in a speedy flow.

Admission and cashier team. A set of samurai armor and a white silk gown in the back.

Mochi making team is responsible for the smooth supply flow of steamed rice and cakes to the serving team and demonstration team equipped with half dozen electric steamers.

Pounding demonstration. Not as easy as one may think. The mallet is quite heavy and the rice gets sticky. Absolute timing is a must between  pounder and turner.

Happy faces of families and couples enjoying the variety of treats.

Jerry Giles, the Chairman of the Board, JVS takes a big whack.

A little one challenges with a big help from the experienced.
